Our Family’s First Cruise: DFDS from Copenhagen to Oslo

Traveling from Copenhagen to Oslo aboard the DFDS overnight cruise was one of the most memorable experiences of our Scandinavian trip. For our family—two parents, one son, and one daughter—it was also our very first time on a cruise. We weren’t sure what to expect, but it turned out to be fun, comfortable, and surprisingly relaxing.

1. Getting to the DFDS Terminal

We took a local bus from Copenhagen city center to the DFDS terminal. It was simple and affordable, and the ride itself took less than 30 minutes. The bus dropped us off just a short walk from the terminal entrance, making the entire process smooth even with luggage and kids in tow.

2. Boarding: Smooth and Exciting

As we boarded in the afternoon, there was a mix of excitement and curiosity—none of us had been on a ship this size before!
The check-in process was easy, and we had enough time to settle into our cabin and explore the ship before departure. The kids immediately ran to the window in our cabin, eager to watch the ship pull away from the harbor.

3. Onboard Fun for the Whole Family

The ship had more to offer than we imagined:

  • A table tennis room where our son and daughter played match after match—sometimes we even joined in!
  • A cozy cafeteria that served everything from warm pastries to light meals. It was our go-to spot for snacks and drinks throughout the trip.
  • A surprisingly well-stocked duty-free shop, perfect for grabbing gifts or a few treats for ourselves.

It was amazing how comfortable everything felt, even though we were literally sailing overnight between countries.

4. Sunset and Quiet Moments

One of the most special moments was standing together on the deck as the sun set over the sea. The sky changed colors slowly, and the gentle breeze made it feel magical. It was quiet and calm—just us, the open water, and the sound of the ship cutting through the waves.

5. Arriving in Oslo: A Peaceful Morning

We woke up early the next morning to see the ship glide through Oslofjord, passing by small islands and forested coastlines. The children were just as mesmerized as we were. We had a quick breakfast at the cafeteria and then packed up, arriving in central Oslo just in time to start a new day.

6. Would We Do It Again?

Absolutely. It was more than just a way to get from one city to another—it was an experience our whole family will never forget. For first-time cruisers like us, the DFDS journey was easy, enjoyable, and just the right mix of fun and relaxation.
